My Concept of Literacy

As a graduate of the M.Ed. Literacy, Language, and Culture program at the University of Illinois Chicago, I am seeking an English/Reading teaching position in Chicago. I have taught in a variety of situations from full class instruction to individual tutoring. My educational philosophy is constructivist and multi-cultural with a commitment to social justice, fine arts, and technology. My understanding of literacy within the discipline of teaching English language arts is based on providing students with the essential skills to read, write, speak, and think critically. My concise working definition of literacy is: the ability to identify and create levels of meaning through and within texts, demonstrated by reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a variety of live and/or digital contexts.
